Student Advising Through the Challenge Foundation

A 20-year veteran of the home building and land development industry, Darwin Horan serves as president of Ventana Capital in Englewood, Colorado. In this role, he leads the development of 17 subdivisions and handles over $200 million in assets. Darwin Horan also supports a number of community organizations, including the Challenge Foundation, which offers educational opportunities for at-risk Colorado youth.

In addition to early intervention for younger students, the Challenge Foundation offers scholarships and support services for students in sixth grade through college. Among the program’s most vital components is one-on-one advising from qualified, caring adults. Challenge Advisers stay in close contact with teachers and parents, participating in conferences and reviewing grades regularly. They also provide emotional support for students who are facing obstacles at home or going through transitions such as school changes. To date, regular advising sessions have helped the Challenge Foundation enjoy a 90 percent student retention rate.
